Measure the packed shipment
A product's catalog dimensions are not the same as its final shipping dimensions. Protective material, inner packs, the outer carton and reinforcement can all change the space the shipment occupies. Ask for the final outer-carton dimensions and packed weight rather than relying only on the bare product size.
For parcel and express services, carriers may consider dimensional weight as well as actual weight. The billing method is service-specific, so confirm the applicable rule in the written quote instead of applying one formula to every shipment.
Send the final packed data
- Final outer-carton length, width and height, with units
- Packed weight, carton count and groups of cartons with the same size and weight
- China pickup point or supplier city
- United States ZIP code, FBA warehouse code or delivery address

Air freight space counts
Comparing air freight from China to the United States? Do not compare a rate per kilogram until you know which weight it applies to. Actual weight includes the packaging; volumetric weight represents space. Air freight generally uses the larger figure, subject to the service's billing rules. Prepare comparable carton data
Group cartons only when their packed dimensions and weights are the same. If a batch has different sizes, record them separately rather than reporting one guessed average.
Ask three questions when comparing quotes
- Are both quotes using the same cargo data? Check carton count, packed dimensions and actual weight. Distinguish estimates from measurements already taken.
- Is the calculation the same? Ask for the stated chargeable weight, units, divisor and rounding method. A parcel-service calculation is not automatically the rule for your air freight shipment.
- Is the service scope comparable? Confirm what the written quotation includes and excludes. A matching rate per kilogram can still produce a different total.
Would smaller packaging help
It can be worth reviewing unused space, but protecting the product still matters. FedEx's dimensional-weight guidance discusses right-sizing without overpacking or underprotecting the item. This is not a guarantee of savings on a Qianding shipment.
Before requesting repacking, agree the work and charges, then compare the revised packed measurements and full quotation. Repacking that reduces volume may not reduce the total payable amount. Do not remove necessary protection, required labels or safety markings merely to reduce dimensions.

Can product dimensions replace packed-carton dimensions?
No. Product dimensions do not include the final shipping carton, protective material or reinforcement. Use the final outer dimensions and packed weight for quote comparison, and mark unfinished packing data as an estimate.
Can I compare only the rate per kilogram?
No. Compare the chargeable weight and the service scope as well as the rate. Confirm both quotes use the same cargo and packaging data.
Can one average carton size represent a mixed batch?
Separate cartons with different packed dimensions or weights. An average can hide the variation needed to check the service's calculation.
Does repacking always lower the final bill?
No. Review protection requirements, the revised measurements, handling charges and the complete quotation before deciding. Reduced volume does not guarantee a lower total.
Do I need all carton measurements to start an inquiry?
You can start with the cargo name and United States destination. Detailed carton data and applicable service rules must be confirmed before a firm quote or booking.
Is the volumetric formula fixed?
No. Carriers, routes, and transport modes may use different divisors.
Why is billed weight different from scale weight?
Because the route may charge by volumetric or chargeable weight, not only actual weight.
Does ocean shipping care about volume?
Yes. Ocean LCL commonly uses CBM as a key billing variable.
How can volumetric weight be reduced?
Review unused space and suitable carton sizes while preserving product protection and required markings. Confirm repacking charges and the revised full quotation; reduced volume does not guarantee a lower total.
